Details of the Safe Kids Buckle Up programme which was created by Safe Kids Worldwide and programme sponsor Chevrolet/ General Motors in partnership with the UAE National Transport Authority and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) were revealed at a major press conference held in Dubai.

The objective of the Safe Kids Buckle Up programme is to raise awareness and understanding of the issues surrounding child passenger safety in the UAE, in a shared desire to prevent children from being injured and killed in and around vehicles. In particular, it will focus on encouraging the use of child car seats, educating parents on the dangers of leaving children unrestrained in cars and advocating for quality child safety seats.

According to a 2008 report from Safe Kids Worldwide, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and Roadway Transportation and Traffic Safety Research Centre in UAE, there were 460 traffic deaths reported among 0-14 year olds in the UAE between 2000 and 2006. Of these, two thirds were 0-4 year old infants and toddlers. At the same time, research conducted by road safety experts in the United States has shown that correctly fitted child seats reduce child fatalities by up to 70%.

To promote the use of correctly fitted child safety seats, the Buckle Up programme will comprise a number of carefully targeted elements. A major advertising campaign, built around the theme 'If you really want to hold onto them, let them go and strap them in', will take to the UAE's television screens, newspaper and magazine pages, on-line media and outdoor sites from November 7th.

During November, the public will also be able to receive advice on vehicle safety for children and view live demonstrations on how to correctly install and buckle up child seats courtesy of an interactive roadshow that will be visiting three of Dubai's main shopping malls - Ibn Battuta from 6 - 8 November, Burjuman from 12- 15 November and the new Dubai Mall from 23-30 November.

Chevrolet dealers across the UAE - Al Ghandi Auto, Bin Hamoodah Auto and Liberty Automobiles Co. will help to drive home the message by demonstrating how to secure your children safely. Specially trained staff will be on hand to provide visitors with advice, information and educational material, as well as offering visual demonstrations in the showroom. The next phase of the programme will involve reaching out to schools and hospitals across the UAE.

David Bennett, Chief Advancement Officer for Safe Kids Worldwide, said:
"Road traffic injuries are a growing danger and are projected to be the third leading cause of death and disability to children worldwide by 2020. The Safe Kids Buckle Up programme will give families the knowledge and tools to help keep their children safer in vehicles."

Commenting on the launch of the programme, Fadi Ghosn, Marketing Director of General Motors - Middle East Operations, said:
"As a company with more than a quarter of a million employees globally, General Motors has an unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the world around us. We are delighted to launch this child safety project, which aims to protect our children."

Speaking on behalf of the UAE National Transport Authority, Engineer Ebtisam AlKaaiti commented, "Traffic accidents are one of the major problems in our society due to its social and economic impacts. One of our goals at the National Transport Authority is to set forth origrans that lead to a reduction in the number of road deaths and injuries in the UAE."

"Lying at the very core of UNICEF's mandate is child protection, which includes providing regular and sufficient awareness on road safety, especially with a view to tackling and preventing growing trends of road accident-related mortality among children and adolescents across the GCC. We are pleased to support this important initiative," said today Dr. Ayman Abu Laban, UNICEF Representative for the Gulf Area Office

General Motors's Middle East Regional PR & Communications Manager Saada Hammad said:
"We hope Regional laws on child passenger safety are behind the rest of the world and we hope that this initiative will help to lead to a change in legislation in the area of passenger safety. We believe that a combination of innovative integrated legislation, enforcement, training and education by creating child-friendly environments, has the potential to dramatically reduce the numbers of injuries and deaths."

This new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative is part of General Motors and Chevrolets' commitment towards the local community. The Safe Kids Buckle Up programme was created in the United States in 1996 through a partnership between Safe Kids Worldwide and General

Motors. Today the programme has inspected more than a million car seats for proper installation and reached more than 19 million people at community events.

GM and Chevrolet are also focused on providing a comprehensive list of safety and security features across their vehicle range, like safety belts, rollover-capable airbags, sensors, and structural protection including crush zones and safety cage designs.
