SKMC Infection Control Committee plans to mark this as an annual commemorative event that shines the spotlight on the infection control profession and its work in educating healthcare professionals, administrators and consumers about the importance of reducing the risk of infections
The Infection Prevention Week will:
- Bring Regional attention to the practice of infection prevention and control
- Honor infection prevention for their daily efforts to save lives
- Educate healthcare professionals, patients and the community
The activities this year will include presentations for healthcare providers about hand hygiene and infection control measures. In addition to that, Infection Control department will reach out the public on the 11th of November in Abu Dhabi Bus and Taxis Station and on the 13th & 15th of November in the Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi.
Commenting on the Infection Prevention Week, Dr. Scott Strong, Acting CEO of SKMC stated that "there is a growing realization that spread of infections is a world-wide problem in the community and day-care centers world-wide. In a historic sign of solidarity, this year's initiative to celebrate the Infection Prevention Week is collectively supported by our affiliates, School Health, Preventive Medicine and Public Health".
"SKMC continues to be proactive in reaching out to the community with health information on the prevention of some of the most common diseases as well as infection prevention. The activities planned are targeted to healthcare providers in addition to the public,"
Dr. Strong added.
Lew Hutchison, Quality Director at SKMC, added "With the theme "Infection prevention is everyone's business", our Infection Control team will highlight the work of Infection preventionists during this week. It is an opportunity to spread the word about prevention of infection through interactive contests, giveaways and informational sessions. This will also help us to focus on public and professional attention on the seriousness of Hospital and Community infections and on the measures to be taken to reduce them".
Shamiso Fred, Infection Control Practitioner, said that "Scientific evidence has shown that simple infection control measures such as proper hand washing, when used by everyone, can reduce spread of infection. There is reason for optimism that current realization and spirit of togetherness in this fight to control infection at our Facility and the community will lead to the development of more effective methods of preventing infection regionally. It is worth to mention that most of these infections are preventable, which is why it is everyone's business to prevent infections."
