The number of people with diabetes around the world is predicted to double over the next 25 years, and this epidemic is set to contribute to an explosion of cardiovascular disease, as warned by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).
"There is a need to address the risk factors which lie behind diabetes and cardiovascular disease. And change in lifestyle is one of these major factors. Moreover, people with diabetes should be given the tools to manage their condition. As healthcare professionals, we have an important role to play. By monitoring blood sugar and keeping it within a target range, patients can reduce risks such as eye, kidney, blood vessel and nerve damage,"said Dr. Christopher Dias, Medical Director, from Welcare DTC,
"World Diabetes Day is the opportunity for Welcare DTC to reach out and educate the patients as well as undiagnosed diabetes sufferers in Oman about basic concepts of diabetes and ways to monitor and manage their blood sugar", added Dr. Christopher Dias.
On these days, Welcare DTC team will be on hand to answer any questions people may have about diabetes or indeed any other health conditions, both at the clinic and at Sultan Centre. The test involves a simple blood glucose test, the results of which will be made available on the spot and will also help patients adjust their insulin or food intake accordingly.
