About Abu Dhabi:

Abu Dhabi is the largest of the seven Emirates which make up the United Arab Emirates and accounts for more than 87% of the country's landmass.

Abu Dhabi city, built on the largest of almost 200 natural islands surrounding the Emirate's mainland, is the capital both of the Emirate and of the country. It is the federal seat of government and home to most ministries and institutions, embassies, state broadcasting facilities and oil companies. The city was named 'A World Winning City In The Making' in the 2008 Jones Lang LaSalle 'Emerging World Class Cities' report. Al Ain, in the eastern province is the Emirate's second-largest city and its cultural heartland.

With an estimated 9.2% of proven global hydrocarbon reserves, Abu Dhabi is one of the world's richest states. Realising the challenges posed by the country's heavy economic reliance on finite carbon reserves, the Emirate's leadership is actively pursuing economic diversification.

The Government of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has designed an Urban Plan 2030 to manage anticipated population expansion and guide the Emirate's economic diversification drive. The plan aims to oversee the evolution of Abu Dhabi city into a stately, global capital.

Tourism has been identified as a high potential economic driver and its promotion is being led by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority. The authority has a five-year strategic plan 2008-2012 which aims to deliver 2.7 million hotel guests by the end of 2012. Tourism targets are to be achieved by focusing on sector standardisation, enhancement of the tourism experience, improved destination access, increased international marketing, additional product development and capitalisation and preservation of the Emirate's distinctive culture, values and traditions.

With its natural islands, warm, marine life-rich seas, 700 kilometres of coastline and a national psyche of protecting its cherished heritage and Arabian traditions, Abu Dhabi is aiming to become a distinctive international tourism destination.
