Abdullah bin Meshar, owner of Al Muhairi Foodstuffs, was elected Vice-Chairman, and Vasi Khan, General Manager of Sahar Enterprises, was made Secretary General.

Rushton is General Manager of Freshly Frozen Foods, a Dubai-based food manufacturing and trading company, which serves markets across the GCC, Europe and the United States.

He worked as an environmental health officer in the UK before joining Dubai Municipality in 1991 as Head of Food Control. Since 1999 Rushton has been a private food consultant in the UAE.

The Dubai Foodstuffs Trading Business Group was created with the legal backing of DCCI in October last year. The group elected a 12-strong representative committee in December.

A total of seven new Dubai-based business groups have been set up to date.
Each group has its own elected representative committee, which will work towards identifying common business objectives and strategies, and establish a business plan that represents the interests of group members.

Said Rushton: "The function of the Foodstuffs Trading committee is to represent members, invite them to forward problems they are facing in Dubai and the UAE, and to look at ways of resolving issues amicably."

Rushton continued: "It is our duty to be proactive, assessing the current situation and finding ways to help improve trade."

Another meeting of the Foodstuffs Trading Group's representative committee is planned to discuss working methods and regulations, before a general meeting with group members is scheduled.

Rushton said that group general meetings would take place at DCCI at least once a month.
