EMAL smelter on target for hot metal production in 2010

  • United Arab Emirates: Wednesday, November 12 - 2008 at 14:52
  • PRESS RELEASE

Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) CEO, Duncan Hedditch, confirmed at the MEED Abu Dhabi Conference that the UAE's industrial flagship, the world's largest single site aluminium smelter complex, is on schedule to produce hot metal by 2010.

As part of the Petrochemicals and Heavy Industries panel at the Conference, Duncan Hedditch presented "From a vision of the future to an emerging reality" incorporating the latest developments on the EMAL site, production updates and a review of milestones achieved.

Hedditch referred to the ambitious targets EMAL has sucessfully met so far in the building of this smelter. "From the first ground-breaking in May 2007 and the first concrete piling in January 2008, we have made outstanding progress and the latest achievement is the erection of the first Potroom Steel, which took place in October 2008. Phase one is on schedule to produce hot metal in 2010, and we are currently undertaking the pre feasibility survey for phase two."

Over 8 million man hours have already been worked on this ground-breaking project, with over 7,000 people on site representing 12 contractors, plus EMAL staff. Upon completion, phase one of the smelter will bring 2,000 permanent jobs to Abu Dhabi, increasing to 3000 in phase two.

The finished smelter will be the largest in the world, producing 1.4 million tonnes of aluminium - an amount equivalent to 12,000 Airbus A380s - once phase two is active. The EMAL smelter complex adds tangible value to the industrialization of the Abu Dhabi economy and its diversification beyond oil and gas, encouraging downstream opportunities and potential employment in the region.

EMAL is a joint venture (JV) between Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (DUBAL) and Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala) and was established in February 2007 to construct what will become the world's largest single site aluminium smelter complex. The project will be built in two phases and utilise Emirati-developed technology. At the end of phase one in 2010, EMAL will produce 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum and 1.4 million tonnes annually at the end of phase two. The aluminium complex, a 6sq km site in the Khalifa Port Industrial Zone in Taweelah, half way between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will produce primary aluminium with a product mix of sow, standard ingot, billet, tee ingots and sheet ingot.

Being the largest industrial project in the UAE outside the oil and gas industry, the project will encourage economic diversification, creating downstream opportunities. This development will benefit the UAE economy, employing more than 14,000 local and international contractors/staff during construction and 2000 people direct employment during operations.

EMAL adheres to strict environmental standards set by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency, with state-of the-art emission control equipment including sulphur-dioxide scrubbers, the latest potroom gas treatment technology, the best-available gas turbine systems, and cooling towers to eliminate thermal stress on local marine life.
