The steadily growing area of Nanotechnology is expected to emerge as a strategic branch of science and engineering, fundamentally restructuring technologies used for manufacturing, medicine, defense, energy production, environmental management, transportation, communication, computation, and education, to mention a few.

The summit will involve more than 30 delegates at a senior level from 14 countries in the Asian region. It will be an opportunity to set the strategic and economic directions for nanotechnology within the Asian region for the next decade. The summit will also involve keynote speeches and workshops delivered by experts with substantial achievements and influence in research and development in each economy.

The summit is organized with the technical support from the Asia Nano Forum (ANF) headquarters in Singapore and the sponsorship of the Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat).

Dr. Arif Al-Hammadi, Manager of Khalifa University, said:
"Hosting this summit will provide a venue for us to benefit from the knowledge and expertise of other countries, and will be the start of much useful collaboration. We hope that this will be the initial step towards the establishment of nanotechnology research, development, and industry in the country."

Dr. Mohammed Al-Mualla, Coordinator of Research and Postgraduate Studies, said "The Summit will start on its first day with a closed meeting where delegates will present updates on nanotechnology policies and developments in their countries. The second day will have an open workshop on the applications of nanotechnology in the water and energy industries. This will be followed by a round-table discussion on collaboration prospects."

In parallel with the Summit, Khalifa University will also host in its Abu Dhabi Campus, a workshop on Nanotechnology K-12 Education. The workshop is organized by the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) in collaboration with Taiwan. This UAE-Taiwan joint-workshop will invite about 15 Taiwan university professors and school teachers to share with their UAE counterparts how they teach nanotechnology in the elementary schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools.
