Arab Statistic Day initiative to raise awareness on importance of statistics in decision making process

H.E. Sultan Al Mansouri, the UAE Minister of Economy, said that setting the 12th of November as the Arab Statistics Day, is a crucial initiative contributing to raising awareness amongst society members about the importance of statistics in decision making processes.

Arab joint efforts in this field would leverage common Arab initiatives' levels, and is considered a key indicator on technical cooperation between different Arab Stats systems. H.E. Al Mansouri pointed that statistics are a tool needed by organizations and individuals in analyzing and reading facts.

In this occasion, Al Mansouri mentioned that working on establishing the national stats center represents a strategic step to build up a modern national stats system. On this day, the Minister of Economy stated that the Arab Common initiatives are getting more importance, given the international changes as the world is dominated by economic development and technical advancement which creates the need to develop regional statistical capabilities.

H.E. Al Mansouri said that the stats data volume is in growing increase requiring the use of new technologies, and adopting new methods that will allow the storage of such volumes and process them quickly. He said that the UAE is keen on profiting from advanced nations' expertise in data storage and preparation and share this with other Arab stats institutions so the benefit will be also transferred.

H.E. added that the Arab stats institutions hold many responsibilities, being the source of data processing as international relations are being broadly based on data sharing. Al Mansouri stressed that Arab stats institutions will have to build statistical capabilities, particularly in the preparation of specialized Arab workforce, which will contribute to enrich regional expertise in the stats field.

He added that the UAE is keen on developing statistical practice and take it to another level. This was reflected by the federal decision to establish the national stats center as an independent entity, developing stats practices, coordinating stats efforts and training specialized national talents.

Al Mansouri announced that the UAE joined the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS), as part of the efforts exerted by the government to adopt international standards and reach the highest levels in the statistics practices.

The Minister of Economy mentioned the serious efforts exerted by the Central Directorate of Stats and local stats organizations, by concluding the studies done in 2008 in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy.

H.E. said that the UAE will witness another era of stats practices after the establishment of the National Stats Center, as the Arab cooperation is a key component in sharing expertise and data and providing many cooperation opportunities with many Arab stats systems.

At the end, H.E. Al Mansouri hoped that many more achievements will be reached in this field, praising all Arab nations' efforts in preparing qualified talents to supply the need for technical workforce that will add value to the statistics sector and will contribute in additional successes and develop stats practices, leading to social and economic growth.
