Obesity and diabetes workshop to take place today at Arab Health 2003
- United Arab Emirates: Monday, January 27 - 2003 at 10:38
- PRESS RELEASE
The high prevalence of diabetes in the country (20 per cent of the UAE population) is generally attributed to a rise in obesity, often caused by increased unhealthy eating, and decreased physical activity.
Sponsored by Abbott Laboratories, the workshop will be addressed by leading endocrinologists and diabetologists. Topics will include obesity and its prevalence and impact in the Gulf, and the management of obesity by diet, exercise and drugs.
Abbott's sponsorship of the event is in keeping with its mission to improve lives by providing cost effective healthcare products and services. Part of the workshop will focus on the ENDCAD study, which showed that 74% of the UAE population is overweight or obese. This is seen as a major cause in the increase of Type 2 Diabetes.
"Being overweight carries significant risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes," confirms Amer Haddadin, Product Manager, Abbott Laboratories. "Losing weight is difficult for many, but it is undeniably one of the most useful actions you can take to reduce your chances of getting diabetes. The workshop will also look at medical treatments for obesity, and the use of Reductil (sibutramine), a safe and effective oral prescription medication used for the treatment of obesity."
