Coupled with the sprout of methanol projects in the Middle East and North Asia the likelihood of overcapacity during this difficult time seems real.
On 17-18 February 2009 industry experts will convene in Doha at 4th Methanol Markets & Tech discuss and share insights on the methanol markets dynamics, new applications for methanol and deployment strategiesThis annual event aims to provide delegates the opportunity to network with their industry counterpart hailing from Nexant, Tasnee Petrochemicals, Methanex, Assam Petrochemicals, Shenhua Coal Liquefaction, Petronas Methanol Labuan, Heavy Industries, UOP LLC, Methanol Casale, MAN Ferrostaal, Sud Chemie, Chery Automobile and more.
Mr. Graham Hoar, Manager of Gas-Based Chemicals from Nexant will open the conference with a focus presentation on the European and Asian methanol demand trends and outlook.
As for now, the two continents' demand for methanol will likely to be met by Iran's Zagros Petrochemical Complex which reportedly increase its production to two million tons of methanol.
In the North East, Japan's Mitsui Chemicals' plan to invest $13.6m a world's first project to convert carbon dioxide into methanol for petrochemical production and reduction of CO2 emissions will produce about 100 tonnes of methanol a year, hence affecting the traditional feedstock supply of coal and natural gas.
Meanwhile, China, the major coal-based methanol producer, is already weighing their potential capacity and impact on methanol imports.
In fact, Methanol activities in this land is aplenty as another methanol complex managed by East Hope Group is being built in Chongqing city.
The bright spark for methanol it seems could be from fuel cells.
Regarded as the future option for small handhelds, a global distribution network for methanol is needed to feed these cells.
More on where and how else methanol can be applied will be revealed at 4th Methanol Markets & Tech in line with its 2009 theme - 'New Usage, New Markets!'. In addition to this, there will also be in-depth discussions on:
- Global methanol production outlook - new usages versus new markets
- Qatar's Qafac's methanol and derivatives (ammonic, olefins) production plans
- Macro-economic outlook in the Middle East
- Tasnee Petrochemicals - their methanol production
- Establishing a methanol industry in Egypt
- China's coal to methanol production outlook, potential capacity and impact on methanol imports
- Structuring feasible EPC contract under rising capex and resource constraint climate
- Technology innovation & case study for methanol to olefins
- Methanol derivatives markets outlook (formaldehyde)
- Logistics: freight and shipping market outlook
Methanol industry players on the lookout for new project announcements and fresh ways to utilize methanol, should attend this two-day conference, where they can also network with their potential business partners.
