November 14th marks the 'World Diabetes Day' (WDD). This day is celebrated worldwide by over 200 member associations of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in more than 160 countries. In the UAE, the day is commemorated through various activities; Family activities, shopping mall screenings, and other educational activities, all organized by 'Your Health Matters' campaign
The aim of this initiative in the UAE is to raise awareness of the rising prevalence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes; in children and adults, while also educating the population about the common risk factors that may lead to diabetes.
According to recent media reports, there is a staggering 25% prevalence rate among UAE nationals. "Type 2 diabetes is a growing epidemic in the UAE, early diagnosis and early education are crucial for reducing complications and saving lives. The healthcare community, educators, parents and guardians must join forces to help people living with diabetes and prevent the condition in those at risk" said Dr. Abdulrazzaq Al Madani, Head of Emirates Diabetes Society.
As a main partner of the event, Dubai Municipality has granted free entrance to the Park to all children attending the event. Dubai Police provided security measures to ensure a successful day. Starting on November 14th, RTA will brand their taxis with messages promoting the Word Diabetes Day among the public.
The main impetus for this day is education, and fun for the entire family. "25% of UAE's population is diagnosed with Diabetes and approximately 18% are still unaware that they have the disease. Prevention through screenings is the key to stopping the spread of this disease," said Dr. Fatheya Al Awadi, Consultant Endocrinologist, Dubai Hospital.
Mr. Jean-Marc Voissier, General Manager sanofi-aventis in Gulf countries, said:
"It is our duty as partners in the Health sector to raise health awareness among the public. Type 2 diabetes is a growing epidemic in the UAE, we are providing support to explore all means to manage this disease,"
In that context, 'Your Health Matters' campaign will run several 'mall screening activity' for the public in the UAE in the coming few months. The screening will measure random blood sugar, hypertension, and waist circumference. Public invitation to the 'mall screening activity' will be accordingly advertised.
