Rolls-Royce Trent 500 powers delivery of first A340-600 for SAA
- United Arab Emirates: Tuesday, January 28 - 2003 at 15:25
- PRESS RELEASE
Rolls-Royce announced recently that the first of nine A340-600s powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 500 engines had been delivered to South African Airways (SAA) at Airbus headquarters in Toulouse.
The Trent 500 is the sole engine for the higher capacity A340-600 and the ultra-long-range A340-500 and more than 400 engines have been ordered to date by 13 customers and operators.
Ralph Murphy, Director of Middle East and African Affairs, Rolls-Royce plc, said: "We are delighted to be part of the celebrations which mark the delivery of the first aircraft in this new fleet. South African Airways and Rolls-Royce have built up an excellent partnership that spans more than four decades. This relationship has been further strengthened by the recent signing of aTotal Care service agreement which has entrusted Rolls-Royce with the long-term health of the Trent 500 fleet."
Rolls-Royce has supplied engines to SAA since the 1960s, when
the Dart entered service on its Vickers Viscounts.
With in-service thrust ratings of 53,000 - 56,000lb, the Trent 500 was certificated at 60,000lb, allowing a comfortable margin for future growth. As the third member of the Trent family to enter service, the Trent 500 builds on five million flying hours already accumulated by the Trent 700 on the A330 and the Trent 800 with the Boeing 777.
The Trent 500 completed an exemplary development programme, achieving all targets on or ahead of schedule. Development engines accumulated over 5,000 engine flying hours during flight testing.
Firm and option orders have been placed for nearly 1,600 Trent series engines powering the A340-600 and -500, A380, A330 and Boeing 777 by a total of 39 customers and operators. The Trent family has a market share of over 50 per cent on new-generation widebody airliners.

Notes and media contacts
Rolls-Royce plcRolls-Royce plc operates in four growth markets - civil aerospace, defence aerospace, marine and energy. It is a global company investing in technology and capability that can be exploited in each of these sectors to create a competitive range of products.
The success of these products is demonstrated by the company's rapid and substantial gains in market share over recent years. As a result, engine deliveries have grown and the company now has a total of 54,000 gas turbines in service worldwide. The investments in product, capability and infrastructure to gain this market position create high barriers to entry.
Rolls-Royce has a broad customer base consisting of more than 500 airlines, 4,000 corporate and utility aircraft and helicopter operators, 160 armed forces and more than 2,000 marine customers, including 50 navies. The company has energy customers in nearly 120 countries. Rolls-Royce employs around 38,000 people worldwide, including 23,500 in the UK, 5,000 in the rest of Europe and 8,000 in North America.
Most of the engines in service will have operational lives of 25 years or more, generating an assured aftermarket demand for the provision of spare parts and services. The company's strategy is to maximise aftermarket revenues through the development of a comprehensive services capability.
Annual sales total around £6 billion of which over 40 per cent currently comes from aftermarket services. The order book stands at more than £19 billion, which, together with aftermarket demand, provides visibility as to future activity levels.
