Marriott's major initiative as a global organisation is to focus on our social responsibility and contribute to the environment and communities where the Marriott operates.

Francisco Giles, as President of the Dubai Marriott Business Council and General Manager of Renaissance Dubai Hotel, announced the green initiatives of the four Marriott hotels in Dubai.

Giles said:
"Our hotels are committed in the reduction of water & Energy consumption, Recycling, Reduction of plastic consumption, conversion of air-conditioning chillers and refrigeration equipment from CFC to NON-CFC gases and educating our associates and guests on energy efficient initiatives. In so doing, we hope to contribute to the reduction of fuel and water consumption by 25% over the next 10 years per available room, engaging our top vendors to supply price-neutral greener products across our global $10bn supply chain; design and construct greener hotels with Marriott hotels development partners and most importantly, educate our guests and associates to support the environment."

The four Marriott properties in Dubai will be combining efforts in reducing water & energy consumption through more efficient & innovative technology such as: energy saving bulbs, water savers on shower heads & taps. These efforts are undertaken in the light of global water scarcity and depleting natural resources.

All Marriott hotels recycle paper, cardboard, glass, oil, plastic, wood, aluminium & printer cartridges in addition to reducing the use of paper through more efficient technology. The recycling concept is being introduced into guest rooms in about 10 test markets.

A new initiative is cutting back on plastic consumption and instead, purchasing recyclable products. The Marriott Dubai Hotels are also in the process of converting air-conditioning chillers and refrigeration equipment from CFC to NON-CFC gases to reduce the impact on the ozone layer depletion.

All of these efforts would not be successful without the green ambassadors, the Marriott associates and guests who are continuously being educated about energy efficient initiatives. Marriott also engages customers to participate in the program through programs like the "Bed linen and Towel reuse program," when they choose to reuse their bath towels and bed linen instead of changing it daily.

A senior level green council in Marriott makes sure that all these green initiatives are being synthesized whereby the most important part of this is to empower Marriott employees to come up with ideas and to make sure that their respective hotels implement them.
