BT's innovative project to build new generation networks (NGN) in Port Ghalib resort on the Red Sea was selected on the basis of its reach, flexibility, reliability and levels of service, among other parameters.

According to the organisers, customer satisfaction ratings, cost savings and other business benefits were also taken into account by the jury when evaluating projects.

BT signed the initial contract with EMAK Information Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Kuwaiti-based Al-Kharafi Group, in December 2007. Under the terms of the agreement, BT is delivering innovation and global know-how to the customer's real estate development of a technologically-advanced and fully-interconnected smart city that comprises 22 hotels, an international conference centre with offices and shopping malls, a 1,500-yacht marina, an 18-hole golf course and over 9,000 villas and apartments

The Telecoms World Awards Middle East event, running for the second year, is organized by a Dubai-based business media and events agency Terrapinn.

Brian Armstrong, Vice President, Middle East and Africa, said:
"We are delighted to receive this award, recognising the know-how and expertise we bring to the region and specifically to Egypt. This award serves as further proof of the excellent service that has already been delivered and provides us with new inspiration to deliver on the Smart Cities concept not only in Port Ghalib, but the region as a whole."
