Fastlink completes successful trials, implementation of GPRS roaming

Marking the newest milestone for Jordan's ICT sector, Fastlink announced the successful testing and implementation of the first GPRS roaming capability in the Middle East.

Fastlink's earliest GPRS Roaming partner is StarHub of Singapore. The next move will include testing similar setups with regional Mobile operators technically prepared for GPRS roaming.

Fastlink is also presently testing GPRS roaming with other international partners including Swisscom of Switzerland, Sonera of Finland and Etisalat of the UAE. At the same time, the company is also trailing MMS roaming with Mobile One in Singapore.

To subscribers, the implementation of GPRS roaming means they can continue to access the Internet using their handset, or laptops connected to handsets, while on travel. GPRS is a technology that allows for always-on access to the Worldwide Web.

Fastlink has demonstrated a solid track record of technological breakthroughs: the company was the first operator in the region, and among the world's first, to roll out MMS services; in 2002, it was among the first in introducing GPRS to the Middle East; and in 2000, was the first in the region to launch WAP services.

Commenting of his company's latest achievement, Eng. Mohammad Shabib, director of international roaming at Fastlink said: "Fastlink has long made a commitment to position Jordan at the forefront of innovation telecommunications technology, taking a leading role on the regional and international stages. Today we are laying a new milestone which would further Jordan's reputation as an ICT leader. The Jordanian subscriber will reap tangible benefits of GPRS roaming in the near future when we expand implementation to include regional operators."
