United States welcomes adoption of Doha Conference Outcome Statement

The United States is pleased that the international community adopted the review Conference Outcome Statement, thus reaffirming the Monterrey Consensus, which emphasizes that reducing poverty depends on foreign aid, expanded trade, and private investment.

President Bush has doubled the amount of U.S. foreign aid since taking office, has signed 10 free trade agreements with developing countries, and created compacts with 16 developing countries under the Millennium Challenge Corporation.

This strategy has created a new development paradigm based on results and improving the quality of assistance. The United States will remain the world leader in advancing global development consistent with the Monterrey principles, even in these times of economic difficulty.

Administrator Henrietta H. Fore was the lead U.S. delegate at the Doha Financing for Development Conference.
