The forum will address the role of ICT in empowering and enriching the lives of visually impaired individuals, and showcase some of the assistive technologies currently available in the market.

The event is the first in a series of events that embody ictQATAR's promise to inspire the lives of people through information technology, regardless of their impairments.

"We believe ICT is an equalizer in society, it serves to remove dividing lines between those who have and those who have not," said Dr. Hessa Al-Jaber, ictQATAR's Secretary General, stressing that equal access to technology is the key to a knowledge society where ICT opportunities are equally shared.

A number of public figures, ICT solution providers and accreditors will attend the event where various assistive technologies will be demonstrated. A panel discussion will also be held, to discuss how assistive technology can help compensate and overcome any physical and functional disabilities and ensure active participation in society.

The celebration is in line with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)'s announcement of 2008 as the year for equal ICT opportunities for all, with a call to encourage the design and production of assistive ICT equipment and services, to ensure the integration of the insights, ideas and opinions of the disabled community into an inclusive information society.

The United Nations' International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an annual event aimed at mobilizing support for the dignity, rights and well being of persons with disabilities, and creating awareness about the positive social, political, cultural and economic contributions that disabled persons can have in society.
