Security firms offer protection against pirates

Shippers based in the UAE are being approached by independent security firms offering armed guards to join the crews of vulnerable vessels to counter the threat of piracy, reported The National. Among those known to have offered their services is the US security firm Blackwater, which supplied the mercenaries who shot dead 17 Iraqi civilians in an incident in Baghdad last year. A UAE seafarers' charity is urging companies against hiring private security, warning that this would put seamen's lives at risk.
