Black Nation is a film that takes an uncompromising look at the state of black manhood in America as seen through the prism of the streets of Detroit, past and present, and that city's controversial Church of the Black Madonna. Swedish filmmaker Mats Hjelm draws on his deep personal connection to the church and the city, to explore the racial, cultural and political ramifications of a "black male genocide" - all within the context of the decomposition of a once proud city. In a year where an African American has ascended to the most powerful office on earth, Black Nation offers the audience a penetrating look at what it really means to be a black man in urban America today. It also offers a hopeful vision of the future in the form of a church with a solution. Black nation is a Herrlander Pictures film in association with Open Door Co.

Sheila Whitaker, Director of International Programmes, states: "We are honoured to give the film its World Premiere at DIFF, and for those who ask what relevance a film on black men in America has for the Middle East, we say that the topics of poverty, social decay and neglect are wide-ranging themes and that a message of hope is always welcome. Mats Hjelm has created a gripping reflection on a crucial issue."

"We are extremely proud and honoured that The Dubai International Film Festival has chosen our film to be the site of its World Premiere," says producer Claes Herrlander. Executive Producer Tom Powers adds: "Black Nation is an incredibly timely film which underlines the challenges and opportunities facing African American men in Obama's America - in language and images that he could never use."

Black Nation was produced with the assistance of The Swedish Film Institute, Swedish Public broadcaster SVT and private investors.
