Microsoft launches Imagine Cup 2009 in Jordan

Microsoft launched Imagine Cup 2009 targeting all Jordanian students, during a Student Festival that was organized by Microsoft at the University of Jordan and was attended by approximately 900 students from a pool of public universities across the Kingdom.

The launch event, attended by Mr. Naseem Tuffaha, Director of the Developer and Platform Evangelism (DPE) Group at Microsoft MEA, aimed at creating awareness among students about the objectives and significance of this competition.

Imagine Cup 2009 will be held under the theme 'Solve the world's toughest problems.'

The worldwide premiere student competition, organized by Microsoft, encourages the youth to apply their imagination, their passion and their creativity to technology innovations that can make a difference in the world.

Mr. Zeid Shubailat, Country Manager of Microsoft Jordan said,
"Microsoft believes that Imagine Cup is an important opportunity to highlight young and talented Jordanians especially in the field of IT and provide them with the recognition they deserve across the region. With that in mind, Microsoft will support the Jordanian participants by providing them with training through the Microsoft Innovation Accelerator Program, which will help their projects progress successfully and give them a push to attend the finals that will be held in July 2009 in Cairo."

He went on to say, "Microsoft would like to thank JUNET, represented by Mr. Yousef Tourman, as well as the Deans and Heads of the IT Departments at the various Jordanian universities for strongly supporting their students and making technology available and accessible to each and every one of them".

Mr. Yousef Turman, Managing Director of JUNET, said, "This competition is very important due to the major role it will play in highlighting our youth's talents and potentials in technology. These potentials deserve attention and development, which is where competitions such as Imagine Cup are extremely valuable. We applaud and appreciate Microsoft's role and attention in promoting and encouraging the students, helping to further enhance their IT skills and its continuous efforts to provide them with the latest software and tools that they can utilize to build their future careers and serve their communities."

Microsoft continually develops initiatives that focus on serving and supporting the youth; such as the launch of the DreamSpark initiative and the Office Home & Student Campaign.

Also, Microsoft will officially launch the Office Home & Student Campaign, which will provide students with the opportunity to receive special offers on laptops that include a 15% discount on laptops purchased from Microsoft partners participating in the campaign.

Candidates will be contacted to present their projects and accordingly they will be provided with training at the Microsoft Innovation Center.

A judging committee, which will include a number of officials and Microsoft Partners, will evaluate the participating projects. The committee members will be announced at a later date.

One winner will be selected from the Jordan chapter of the Imagine Cup 2009 at the end of April and then go on to represent the Kingdom at the worldwide finals in Cairo in July 2009; Microsoft will cover all travel and participation expenses for the Jordanian finalist.
