Petra 'at risk' from tourist numbers

The Jordanian Department of Antiquities (DoA) Director General Fawwaz Khraysheh has warned that the increasing number of visitors to Petra poses a threat to archaeological sites. Between 5,000 and 6,000 tourists visit Petra on a daily basis, and the influx has led the department to consider regulating the number of visitors allowed to enter the rose-red city. The DoA also said that a two-year renovation plan includes two museums located in downtown Amman and Madaba, in addition to maintenance work on several others.
