The cross-cultural panel examined the effects of a devastated environment, as well as a total shift in the economic power axis from West to East and a previously unimagined change in the American presidency. It was agreed that cinema should always be able to reach across borders and act as the agent for cultural cohesiveness and collaboration.

The panel comprised Harry Belafonte, well known singer, actor and social activist, Cameron Bailey, screenwriter, journalist, co-director of the Toronto International Film Festival and the moderator of the cultural panel, Mohammed Moulesshoul, a soldier and novelist who writes under the pseudonym of Yasmina Khadra, Deepa Metha, Canada's most renowned female filmmaker and Haile Gerima, Ethiopian-born filmmaker, writer, producer, distributor and film professor.

Hannah Fisher, programme consultant for DIFF, said:
"This year the panellists were so diverse individually that it provided an inspiring mix. There was already such a mutual respect for one another, even before the discussions started, I only asked that they have fun, that they were authentic and true to their heart."

"There is no festival in the world that has a home like Madinat Jumeirah," she added. "Nowhere that has a property so accessible and versatile, making you feel welcomed and treasured."

Hollywood actors Nicholas Cage, star of Gone in Sixty Seconds and City of Angels, and Danny Glover, co-star of the Lethal Weapon series, joined the panellists at an intimate reception on the Executive Terrace in Al Qasr after the discussion.

Jeffrey Wright, who plays General Colin Powell in Oliver Stone's heralded film W, as well as the CIA agent Felix Leiter alongside James Bond 007 in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace joined guests as well as Charles Roven, producer of The Dark Knight and winner of this year's Outstanding Filmmaker of the Year Award.

The themes of the discussion panel continued to be analysed at the reception, where Charles Martin Smith, actor, producer and director quipped, "At one stage, cinema was being blamed for all the world's problems!"

The informal reception marked the end of another important Cultural Bridge panel, as part of the Dubai International Film Festival schedule. Madinat Jumeirah, principal sponsor of DIFF, is hosting the week-long event, which kick-started with a glittering opening night red carpet walked by Hollywood legends including Goldie Hawn and Ben Affleck.
