AUB oncologist-hematologist receives prestigious French medical award

American University of Beirut Medical Center oncologist-hematologist, Dr Ali Bazarbachi, was named Laureate of the French National Academy of Medicine 2008 and received the Prix Aimee et Raymond Mande for his work on targeted therapy on human leukemia.

"It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr. Ali Bazarbachi has been recognized for his excellent research on leukemia," said Dr Nadim Cortas, Vice President for Medical Affairs and the Raja Khuri Dean of Faculty of Medicine and the Medical Center, following the announcement of the prize on December 16.

"The prize received by Dr. Bazarbachi is one of the major and most prominent awards bestowed by the Academy," added Cortas.

The French National Academy of Medicine, founded in 1820, comprises 130 members, highly selected from the medical and scientific research community in France. It presents many awards annually for the most outstanding medical and scientific breakthroughs.

Dr Bazarbachi is a professor of hematology-oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit Director at AUBMC, in addition to being Assistant Dean for Research.

He and his team have been working on determining the deficiencies in cancer cell programs and on finding targeted therapies for those defects that will eliminate malignant cells without harming the normal cells in the body.

He has published more than 85 scientific articles in the most renowned medical journals. His research has led to the discovery of successful treatments currently used to treat incurable types of leukemia and lymph nodes cancer.

Dr. Ali Bazarbachi has previously earned several awards, including the French National League against Cancer Award and from the Lebanese Research Council, the Hafez Kobeissi Award for Scientific Research.
