"The emirate is going through a period of extraordinary growth and diversification, which has made it a magnet for foreign direct investment from all over the world.
"I will be working with our team to identify the economic trends which will be vital knowledge for investors, as we produce what will be an eminent profile of the emirate."
He will be responsible for guiding OBG's team of international analysts in their research for The Report: Abu Dhabi 2009, which will include interviews with about two hundred leading political and economic figures in the emirate.
He will also write weekly economic and business briefings for Abu Dhabi, and contribute a column to Gulf News on behalf of OBG.
McFarlane joined OBG in January 2007, and as OBG Editorial Manager in Qatar, he met many top government leaders and captains of industry in order to gain their insights into future developments in the emirate. Then he spent his time working on The Report: Saudi Arabia 2008, researching macro-economic trends across a broad range of the Kingdom's sectors. He worked closely with the Saudi Arabian government, during which time he was privy to a wealth of fresh economic information on the country.
Prior to working for OBG, McFarlane, a graduate of University College Dublin, completed his Master's in Business Studies at the Michael Smurfit School of Business, Dublin, ranked as one of Europe's top business schools. He later worked in a number of posts, including working as a business analyst in Istanbul.

Available in print form or on line, The Report: Abu Dhabi 2009 will be part of the range of OBG's publications, which are renowned as leading sources of information on developing and emerging economies around the world.
