  • PRESS RELEASE

Gulftainer, the region's leading port management and logistics firm, has announced that its Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT) received the first of Hanjin's ships on its new 'IMU' (India/ Middle East/ USA) service, which is the result of Hanjin (and partners UASC) revamping their services covering South Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean and the US East Coast.

The 'Hanjin Rio De Janeiro' called at Gulftainer's Khorfakkan Container Terminal on Sunday 4 January 2009 under the command of Captain J.S. Lee. The 4,275 teu, 52,000 DWT container ship, built in South Korea in early 2008, is one of Hanjin's contribution of four ships to the service.

Gulftainer Group Director and General Manager Peter Richards commented:
"Hanjin, Senator (and their partners UASC) are old, well-established customers of Gulftainer and Sharjah, and as always we are looking forward to working with them as they enhance their services in the region. Khorfakkan Container Terminal is already well-established as one of the fastest container terminals in the world, and such productivity - and the resultant cost savings - will be more important than ever in the challenging year ahead of us."

"We will certainly do all we can to ensure that this - and all our other customers' services - are operated as quickly and efficiently as possible to save them time and money," Richards added.

Strategically located on Sharjah's Indian Ocean coast, outside the sensitive Straits of Hormuz and close to the main east-west shipping routes, KCT is one of the world's leading container transhipment ports. Only three hours from the UAE's main centres of population, Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, KCT is an ideal transhipment hub port with numerous feeder ship connections to Gulf Ports, Iran, India, Pakistan and East Africa

Notes and media contacts

Gulftainer Company Limited was established in 1976 in the Emirate of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. The company's prime role is to manage and operate the container terminals in Port Khalid and also Khorfakkan on behalf of Sharjah Port Authority.

Complimenting this work, Gulftainer also owns one of the largest heavy transport fleets in the United Arab Emirates, a container repair company, a shipping agency which undertakes local ship/cargo agency work and actively pursues international port management opportunities.

As part of a broad based, privately owned group, Gulftainer Co. Ltd. is able to meet all the requirements of shipping lines in the UAE and also serve the transport needs of UAE based traders and manufacturers. Whilst the company has grown over the years, the management firmly believes in hands-on-control. The lines of communication are deliberately kept short to speed up decision making and maintain momentum.
