Sir Bani Yas Island, one of eight natural islands which make up Desert Islands - the new nature-based destination offshore Abu Dhabi's Al Gharbia (Western Region) - recently launched its phase one which features an up market 64-room resort and spa, nature conservation area and variety of adventure and nature-based activities.

The TDIC-Masdar agreement will serve to develop a number of sustainable energy and water initiatives as part of the island's emphasis on preservation.

"This agreement enhances our sustainability credentials and represents an important step in our commitment to environmental and conservation tourism. We continue to build best-in-class partnerships in order to fulfil our obligations and responsibilities to ensure that Sir Bani Yas and the rest of the Desert Islands become a regional showpiece of sustainability,"
said Mubarak Al Muhairi, TDIC's Managing Director.

Masdar and TDIC will dedicate management and technical expertise to determine the feasibility of developing an energy and water farm on the island. In addition, the two companies will also research and identify other development activities, such as alternative eco-friendly transportation systems, recycling waste to energy systems, and other energy conservation practices.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Masdar Chief Executive Officer, said:
"We are delighted that TDIC wants to embark on the path of sustainable real estate and are pleased to offer our experience. We have gained substantial know-how in sustainable development through the Masdar City development. We expect and look forward to an increasing number of developers in Abu Dhabi to adhere to more sustainable practices; executing the vision and will of the Abu Dhabi leadership in line with the Plan Abu Dhabi 2030."

"Not only will this help Desert Islands to minimize the environmental impact but it sends a clear message about Abu Dhabi's intention to play a decisive role in the future use and direction of future energy," concluded Al Muhairi.
