US, UAE to sign nuclear pact
- United Arab Emirates: Thursday, January 15 - 2009 at 09:23
The Bush Administration plans to sign a nuclear-cooperation agreement with the UAE on Thursday, despite concerns in Congress, The Wall Street Journal has reported, citing officials involved in the negotiations. The pact could help the UAE become the first Arab nation to develop a nuclear-power industry as early as 2017. However, some US lawmakers are seeking to block the deal over fears it could fuel a nuclear-arms race in the Middle East at a time of mounting concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions.
