Nortel files for bankruptcy

Nortel, North America's biggest maker of telecoms equipment, has filed for bankruptcy protection after suffering more than $7bn in losses over four years. The Toronto-based company sought court protection from its creditors in Canada, the US and Europe, leaving the future of its 30,000 employees in doubt.
