Both countries join the IEC as Associate Members with limited participation rights. Associate Members may participate as observers in all technical meetings and in the Council and Standardization Management Board (SMB) meetings held during the annual General Meeting.

They have access rights and can comment on all IEC technical documents. In addition, Associate Members may request the IEC General Secretary to become Participating members (P-members) on a maximum of four technical committees and/or subcommittees with the right to vote on technical work emanating from these committees.

The IEC Family now counts 157 countries (74 Full and Associate Members and 83 Affiliates from developing countries). Altogether the countries in the IEC Family represent more than 95% of the world population.
