In addition to broadening our existing reach it will offer an essential portal for people whose only access to news is via their mobile handsets. We are very pleased with this new development."

Saeed Othman Bawazir, Al Jazeera's Director of Technology, commented, "The Mobile Web initiative is one of the key services that is being launched as part of our New Media strategy. The aim is to make our content more accessible to new audiences across various new platforms. With the launch of this Mobile service, we hope to provide our audience with a customized news browsing experience on the mobile device of their choice."

The mobile websites will provide Al Jazeera headline news, business reports, sports coverage and more. The launch of the mobile websites is part of the ongoing Al Jazeera New Media initiative, which includes delivering video and other content over interactive platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and iTunes as well as other popular services.

Al Jazeera's mobile websites will go live on January 15, 2009.

About Al Jazeera Network:

Al Jazeera started out over twelve years ago as the first channel in the world dedicated to providing comprehensive, independent television news and live debate for the Arab world. The Channel now has an estimated peak audience of over 40 million viewers and in 2005 was ranked by brandchannel.com as the most recognizable and influential television broadcast news brand globally. To compliment the groundbreaking Al Jazeera Arabic, the Network launched Al Jazeera English in November 2006 to bring a Al Jazeera's journalistic vision to the English-speaking world. Al Jazeera English quickly became the channel of record for news from the developing world, and currently reaches over 100 million households globally. As a result of its expansion and the creation of new channels and services, Al Jazeera was formally named the Al Jazeera Network in March 2006, transforming its operation into an international media corporation.

The Al Jazeera Network consists of: the flagship Al Jazeera Arabic, Al Jazeera English, Al Jazeera Documentary, Al Jazeera Sport, Al Jazeera.net (the English and Arabic web sites), the Al Jazeera Media Training and Development Center, the Al Jazeera Center for Studies, Al Jazeera Mubasher (Live), and Al Jazeera Mobile.

Al Jazeera is now broadcast in over 100 countries.
