Unified municipal participation at the Environment 2009 Conference & Exhibition

The Department of Municipal Affairs and the Municipalities of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi announced their participation and sponsorship of the Environment 2009 Exhibition and Conference which is set to taking place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC) between January 19th - 21st.

The Environment 2009 conference and exhibition is the region's premier comprehensive exhibition and conference, which provides an ideal global platform to leverage significant business opportunities presented by public and private sectors, where companies from all over the world showcase and discuss solutions on key environmental issues confronting the Middle East such as; water and waste management, harnessing renewable energy, pollution control and sustainable development. quality

Commenting about the cross-municipal participation, H.E. Rashed Al Hajeri, Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs, said:
"the Department of Municipal Affairs and the municipalities of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi are strongly committed to supporting the vision of H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and the directorship of H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of the UAE and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, which aim to position the Government of Abu Dhabi as one of the top five governments of the world, through achieving sustainable growth and offering service excellence. This includes municipal services with dedicated resources and sustainable public private partnerships which aspire to initiate cross-municipal programs and strategic initiatives that focus on the growth of a sustainable economy, environmental sustainability and protection, as well as social reform."


Al Hajeri Added: "The environmental needs for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is in-line with the department's and municipal objectives of regularly carrying-out overall tactical or structural exercises that enhance the level of expertise on important specific issues and mandates like the environment. This allows for better integration of our cross-municipal internal communications systems and project development on such key important topics like environmental sustainability."

H.E. Ahmed Shareef, Undersecretary of the Department of Municipal Affairs, highlighted the timeliness and importance of the event saying: "This conference and exhibition is not only timely but very important to the Emirate and the region as we experience exciting rapid growth and transformation of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. It is truly imperative that as the governing municipal body we seek to further our understanding and direct participation in the protection of the environment and facilitation of sustainable government programs."

During the three day event at Booth P-09 in Hall 3, the Department of Municipal Affairs and the municipalities, as gold sponsors, will be showcasing alongside their business partners the current environment focused projects and initiatives as well as the state-of-the-art technologies used in waste management, pest control, preservation of habitat and natural resources, as well as the protection programmes focused on reducing pollution and emissions from industrial and oil zones.

The Department of Municpal Affairs is an establishing member of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group and continually works in-line with the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency to raise awareness with regards to the importance of environmental protection and preservation as an essential element of sustainable development.

About Department of Municipal Affairs:
The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) commenced operations in May 2007, following the Abu Dhabi Executive Council's decision to integrate the Emirate's municipal system. As a new government entity, the Department of Municipal Affairs was created to lead, coordinate and oversee three municipalities in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region. The DMA has a regulatory role while the service delivery and operations are at the municipality level.

On the 5th of May 2008, the Department of Municipal Affairs along with the Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality and Western Region Municipality embarked upon a new municipal services journey, with the signing of the historic Municipal Charter which aligns the DMA and three municipalities towards greater collaboration and cooperation.
