With the conception of Integrated Energy Design architecture itself has become a tool to reduce energy consumption. Sustainability is considered already in the early creative design phase.

The building industry accounts for 40% of the overall energy consumption. Often just a variety of energy saving technologies is applied to new building projects. Henning Larsen Architects work with Integrated Energy Design to create energy saving design solutions and masterplans.

Design itself can reduce energy consumption by 80%:

'Sustainability in building construction has never been more important and architects must draw up clear goals and include state-of-the-art technological possibilities for energy-friendly design,' says Design Director Louis Becker, Henning Larsen Architects. 'In order to make a serious impact the design must be formed energy-friendly right from the outset.

More than 100 architects work with Integrated Energy Design at Henning Larsen Architects. In the creative phase the energy consumption of the design is continuously simulated to improve the design and create better energy-optimised buildings and urban areas.

For the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Henning Larsen Architects has created a visionary masterplan including a Project Environmental Sustainability Policy to help the client achieve a standard that will be seen as a world-class example of sustainable development. The project is presented at the World Future Energy Summit. Principal Jacob Kurek, Henning Larsen Middle East, and Design Director Louis Becker will be present at the exhibition.

Reykjavik Concert and Congress Centre (Iceland)

Selected projects in Denmark:

The Opera (Copenhagen)
IT University (Copenhagen)
Danish Design Centre (Copenhagen)
Nordea Bank Headquarters (Copenhagen)

INTEGRATED ENERGY DESIGN:

Integrated Energy Design is a significant technical-scientific development in progress, whereby research has led to accurate simulations of a building's energy consumption.

By implementing an integrated design process, in which the energy consumption is dynamically simulated in relation to the development of the design, it is possible to achieve high energy efficiency and comfort at the lowest price. Integrated Energy Design is an interplay between volumes, materials, room heights, light and shadow, noise, wind and the use of interior and exterior spaces.

KING ABDULLAH FINANCIAL DISTRICT:

Henning Larsen Architects won the international competition to design the masterplan for King Abdullah Financial District in 2006 and has devised a set of guidelines for sustainability. During the building phase Henning Larsen Architects acts as consultants ensuring that the proposed scheme achieves a standard that will be seen as a world-class example of sustainable development.

Henning Larsen Architects masterplan unites the Arabian urban traditions with the modern metropolis giving the Saudi capital Riyadh a public open space and a characteristic skyline with a new outstanding landmark.

The heart of the district is a transformation of the Arabian wadi Hanifa transversing the area. The district will become an active and attractive urban space comprising financial institutions, residential and recreational areas, shops, restaurants, hotels, conference and sports facilities.

The district will feature something as unique as a Saudi Arabian monorail connecting the various areas of the district. All buildings and monorail stations are linked together by air-conditioned footbridges above street level enabling walking distance to all meetings in the Financial District - quite extraordinary for Riyadh.
