With only ten months to go until Abu Dhabi's debut Formula One Grand Prix, His Excellency Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Chairman, Executive Affairs Authority - the UAE capital body responsible for bringing F1 to the emirate - has underlined the 'critical' role golf has played, and will continue to play, in establishing Abu Dhabi's ability to host world-class, international events.

"Golf plays a key role in world sports and it's critical in our plans for Abu Dhabi - golf figures very prominently and this Championship is obviously a big component of that," said Al Mubarak.

"I love this Championship, it's very personal. I've been to many golf tournaments around the world and not many give you the feeling you get from Abu Dhabi's National Course. You can get close to the players, everyone is interacting, there's a very nice crowd - it's a thoroughly enjoyable experience."

Al Mubarak said the popularity of the championship - which is organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority - reinforces the identification of golf as a perfect-fit for the emirate: "The numbers are all solid in terms of the attendance figures for Thursday, Friday and Saturday and that's a positive sign going forward.

"There will soon be many more world-class golf clubs and championship-standard facilities in Abu Dhabi; the Gary Player course on Saadiyat is going to be a great course and there will be also a Links course on Yas Island. New courses will to continue to expand the popularity of the sport locally."
