Zayed University and Salwa Zeidan Gallery to launch Abu Dhabi International Sculpture Symposium

Zayed University has signed a Memorandum Of Understanding with Salwa Zeidan Gallery in Abu Dhabi, to collaborate in establishing and launching the first of it's kind in the UAE "Abu Dhabi International Sculpture Symposium 2009".

The Symposium aims to attract world renowned artists and sculptors to participate in open-air workshops, and work with different mediums to promote and highlight the role of artistic sculptures in urban planning and view Abu Dhabi as a new, unique art capital of the modern world.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Dr.Sulaiman AlJassim Vice President of Zayed University and the artist Salwa Zeidan in Zayed University's Abu Dhabi Campus.

Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim stressed the importance of the "Abu Dhabi International Sculpture Symposium" which translates the vision of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, President of Zayed University in keeping pace with the regions' overgrowing interest in aesthetic and artistic values and enhance Abu Dhabi's role as an important cultural center.

Dr. Al Jassim added that the objective of the Abu Dhabi International Sculpture Symposium (ADISS) is to initiate artistic and cultural co-operation between world-renowned sculptors of different backgrounds from France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, China, Bulgaria, USA, Egypt and The United Arab Emirates, to come together and create their master pieces.

On her part the artist Salwa Zeidan explained that the response to the announcement of this symposium from artists and sculptors around the world was overwhelming, resulting in over 500 applications, which will be short-listed through a three stage evaluation process by the Symposium's Curatorial Team who will select scale models of the proposed sculptural designs.

She added:
"Each applicant must have participated in at least 7 world-renowned symposiums or exhibitions and has the experience to work with different sculpture mediums ranging from marble, limestone, metal etc. The selected proposals will be announced March 2009 and will be realized as full size sculptures distributed throughout Abu Dhabi at the launch of the ADISS in October 2009."
