Operating out of its regional headquarters at Dubai Internet City (DIC), a member of Tecom Investments, Canon Middle East is among 10 business partners to join forces with Tecom as part of an ambitious initiative to reduce carbon emissions by 1,338 tonnes annually. The initiative has already saved 12,230 MWh of energy and reduced water consumption by 20,313 million gallons in addition to helping to cut Tecom's CO2 emissions by 10,924 tones between January and September 2008.
Mai Youssef, Corporate Communications Manager, Canon Middle East, said:
"Canon Middle East is committed to playing a positive role in the communities in which it is a part. Our environmental partnership with Tecom is part of our ongoing environmental stewardship which is embedded in every aspect of what we do, from design to manufacture. Canon helps to reduce the carbon footprint generated in the work place and to improve efficiency through superior technical performance. We will continue to invest in technologies and work with partners that can help us achieve our philosophy of working and living in harmony with the environment."
Malek Al Malek, Executive Director of Dubai Internet City, said:
"The Energy Conservation Programme is in line with DIC's vision to achieve a measurable reduction in our water and energy consumption. The success of this initiative is dependent on the commitment and proactive approach adopted by our business partners such as Canon Middle East. Moving forward, we will continue to engage with our business partners to collaboratively drive the Energy Conservation Programme and achieve more ambitious results."
Today's announcement is the latest in a series of environmental initiatives from Canon. As part of Canon's cradle to the grave production approach, by 2010 the company aims to reduce its carbon emissions to 50% of the output for the same work in 2000. In addition, Canon is the only company to have produced a line of calculators made from recycled material.
Over the years, Canon Middle East has participated in the clean-up and waste collection drives organised by Emirates Environmental Group (EEG). It has also supported the planting of fifty ghaf (prosopis cineraria) trees in the desert near National Avian Research Centre in Sweihan arranged by EWS-WWF.
