The arrival of the General Electric's (GE) frame 9FA advanced gas turbine and associated power generation equipment represents a logistics and infrastructure milestone for the world's largest single-site aluminium smelter complex. EMAL has also taken delivery of more than 125 truckloads of associated equipment.

"Receiving and setting the principal component of the most complex piece of equipment required is a major achievement in constructing any power plant, whether that plant is part of a smelter or simply a utility plant. The arrival of this equipment onsite brings the project one large step closer to completion and hot metal in 2010."

Duncan Hedditch, CEO of EMAL, tells us.

Over the next five months, EMAL will receive five more GE gas turbines and associated generators, which will enable the completion of the first stage of the power generation infrastructure. The 325,000 horsepower gas turbine weighing 280,000 kg, has been specially developed for industrial applications to burn natural gas or fuel oil to rotate the generator, weighing 230,000 kg, to produce approximately 260 megawatts of electricity. This plant will form part of the EMAL smelter, providing the electricity for the production of 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per year produced by the smelter.

The EMAL smelter is being built in two phases, with Phase One, currently on schedule to be completed by 2010, will have a production output of 700,000 tonnes. Upon completion of the second phase, output is expected to reach 1.4m tonnes of primary aluminium.

About the company:

EMAL is a joint venture (JV) between Dubai Aluminium Company Limited (DUBAL) and Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala) and was established in February 2007 to construct what will become the world's largest single site aluminium smelter complex. The project will be built in two phases and utilise Emirati-developed technology. At the end of phase one in 2010, EMAL will produce 700,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum and 1.4 million tonnes annually at the end of phase two. The aluminium complex, a 6sq km site in the Khalifa Port Industrial Zone in Taweelah, half way between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will produce primary aluminium with a product mix of sow, standard ingot, billet, tee ingots and sheet ingot.

Being the largest industrial project in the UAE outside the oil and gas industry, the project will encourage economic diversification, creating downstream opportunities. This development will benefit the UAE economy, employing more than 14,000 local and international contractors/staff during construction and 2000 people direct employment during operations.

EMAL adheres to strict environmental standards set by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency, with state-of the-art emission control equipment including sulphur-dioxide scrubbers, the latest potroom gas treatment technology, the best-available gas turbine systems, and cooling towers to eliminate thermal stress on local marine life.
