Commenting on the campaign Steve Matarelli, Chief Clinical Officer at Tawam said:
"The safety campaign will educate staff members on how to effectively use the international patient safety goals (IPSG) and to improve patient safety. It will consist of various events and activities throughout 2009 and will exemplify and promote safe, high quality patient care in accordance with the JCIA guidelines."
The first patient safety awareness campaign for 2009 took place from February 2nd - 3rd and included several educational activities. To maximise awareness about the campaign slogans entitled 'Patient safety Top Priority' were placed in numerous places around the hospital, employees were sent SMS messages with safety awareness tips and even employee pay slips had reminders about the campaign. In addition, Tawam held a CME session about patient safety and played the Arabic version of the John Hopkins Video on safety in patient waiting areas.
"With thousands of deaths each year around the world due to preventable medical errors, patient Safety can no longer be pushed aside. Patient safety is an explicit organizational goal that should be embraced by management and highlighted throughout the year to every member of staff and to every patient that comes through our doors," said Mr. Matarelli.
The recent campaign also included checking medication for sell-by-dates, distributing medication safety pamphlets, having a pharmacist available to answer questions in the main lobby and an hour long session on medication safety for all of Tawam's Pharmacists. With regards to Infection control, a hand hygiene campaign and award was implemented as well as a safe surgery saves life campaign. The next patient safety awareness campaign will begin on X.
