Insurance leaders revise strategies in light of global economic crises at 5th Annual Middle East Insurance Forum

More than 300 industry leaders gathered for the opening of the two-day 5th Annual Middle East Insurance Forum (MEIF 2009) today at the Gulf International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Gulf Hotel in Bahrain.

The participants are debating the core issues that will shape the future of the Middle East insurance industry. The Forum is being held once again in strategic partnership with the Central Bank of Bahrain and with the support of the Bahrain Insurance Association. This year's gathering is undoubtedly the most critical of its five-year history as the region's major insurance players grapple with a changing economic landscape.

Taking place at an extraordinary time in the international financial markets, MEIF 2009 has set the stage for critical discussions on future growth paths for the regional insurance markets. The Forum is a timely opportunity for industry leaders to review the risks and opportunities in the Middle East insurance markets. Additional discussions are focusing on the role of regulators in further strengthening this market and the future outlook for industry growth. Key global and regional trends have been under the spotlight in view of the current global economic crisis.

The opening keynote session featured perspectives from Abdul Rahman Al-Baker, Executive Director, Financial Institution Supervision Services, Central Bank of Bahrain, Abdul Khalik Raouf Khalil, Secretary General, Arab Insurance Federation (GAIF), HE Dr Bassel Hindawi, Director General, Insurance Commission of Jordan and Chairman of the Arab Forum of Insurance Regulatory Commissions, Husein Mohammed Al Meeza, Managing Director and CEO of AMAN, and Ashraf Bseisu, Chairman, Bahrain Insurance Association and President, General Arab Insurance Federation (GAIF).

The high-profile speakers at the 5th Annual Middle East Insurance Forum are also tackling the challenges of current low insurance penetration levels in the Middle East as well as competition and consolidation in the regional industry and the scope for mergers and acquisitions to strengthen capabilities.

Other industry issues being explored include innovation and development in key products and market segments, the role and opportunity for Captive Management, reinsurance capabilities in the Middle East and the role of process efficiency and technology innovation in delivering superior growth.
