AUD International Aid Club to join Clinton Global Initiative University 2009

  • United Arab Emirates: Monday, February 16 - 2009 at 10:51
  • PRESS RELEASE

Members of the recently established International Aid Club (AIA) at the American University in Dubai (AUD) will be joining thousands of students from around the world in Austin, Texas from February 13 to 15th 2009 for the second Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU), hosted by President Bill Clinton.

The American University in Dubai is the only educational institution from the Middle East to participate in CGIU 2009.

By focusing on the current educational level and promoting ways to enhance learning standards among youth and women, AUD's International Aid Club (AIA) has committed to provide educational and cultural assistance for 7 villages in North West Province of Cameroon. The Club has an established partnership with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for this project, including LUKMEF and PCDI.

AUD External Relations Manager Ms. Peggy Awad comments:

"AUD is proud to see its students making a commitment towards tackling global problems and making a difference in the world as they hold hands with other students, staff and faculty and jointly take real and concrete steps towards solving them. The club is a first of its kind in the region and has gone to great heights in less than 6 months since its inception. AUD fully supports its students' initiatives and highly encourages civic work engagement".

In the first phase of the project, the AIA Club raised money for the project by conducting a Dirham War on campus, a fun way for the different cultural clubs at AUD to compete by increasing or decreasing the opponents coin jar. The $7,000 raised was used for the Computers for Education Forum for training the teachers in Cameron; approximately 200 to 400 school computer teachers from 57 primary and secondary schools across 7 villages... ultimately benefiting all schoolchildren in the area, and a general populace of over 300,000 in the second phase of the project.

Additionally, in the second phase of the project, approximately 16 members of AIA Club will travel to Cameroon in July 2009 to dedicate their time and skills to support the mission, focusing on areas such as renovating the local schools by providing basic equipments for rural schools; promoting cultural activities by endorsing traditional music to generate income; providing training in areas such as leadership, management, organization, record keeping, accounts, etc; helping widows by creating small business enterprises; and training the youths and assisting them in their endeavors to create income generating activities.

AUD International Aid Club Plans for Cameroon Initiative

AIA Club Members have brainstormed and created strategies to raise money for their initiative:

- Created an awareness program of their initiative by partnering with the Red Crescent and creating a charitable event for Somalia
- Raised US$7000 by encouraging the participation of the diverse group of students at AUD in the "Dirham Wars" event.
-Further raise funds by increasing health awareness and engaging AUD students, staff and faculty to participate in Yoga Classes. AIA Club partnered with Physical Advantage Fitness Solutions who dedicated their time and skills in helping us raise more funds.
- Planning to have a photo exhibition that will present AUD student and faculty's work taken from India and South East-Asia and hope to raise awareness of that region while raising funds for this initiative.
- Planning to run a campaign to collect educational tools and school books for the children
- Also aiming to attain partnership or support from NGOs such as UNICEF and One Laptop per Child Organization with the intention of acquiring suitable educational software for the school children
- Continue to reach out to the community in acquiring sponsorships as well as raising awareness of AIA club, its mission and goals.

About Clinton global Initiative University (CGIU)
Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings together world leaders to take action on global challenges, President Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world.

Each year, CGI U hosts a meeting for students and university officials to discuss solutions to pressing global issues. The second CGI U Meeting will be held at The University of Texas at Austin from February 13-15, 2009. Nearly one thousand students will come together to make a difference in CGI U's five focus areas: Education, Energy & Climate Change, Global Health, Peace & Human rights, and Poverty Alleviation. CGI U is more than just an event. It is a growing community of young leaders who don't just discuss the world's challenges -- they take real, concrete steps toward solving them. Throughout the year, and as a prerequisite of attending the CGI U meeting, students and university officials develop their own Commitments to Action: specific plans of action that addresses a pressing challenge on their campuses, in their communities, or in different parts of the world.

About LUKMEF
LUKMEF is a non-governmental organization founded in 1999 directed by an international board of directors to help Cameroon embrace the concepts of peace, non-violence, social justice and sustainable development as the fundamentals of poverty alleviation.

About PCDI
Partners For Community Development Initiative (PCDI) is a common initiative group founded in 2004 in the North West Province of Cameroon. The initiative observed the difficulties faced in rural communities in Cameroon. The poor and down trodden are found in the rural areas and it is also at this level that most agricultural production takes place with little marketing opportunities for the population. The youths and women cannot support themselves economically and socially and as a result there is a massive rural exodus.
