British embassy launches scholarship with HSBC and British Council
British Ambassador John Hawkins and HSBC Qatar Chief Executive Abdul Hakeem Mostafawi joined British Council Director Simon Winetroube to launch the 2009 selection round of the prestigious British Government 'Chevening' scholarship scheme.
The scholarship offers exceptional candidates the opportunity to study at leading universities in the United Kingdom. Aimed at future leaders, opinion formers and decision makers, a Chevening award brings with it the opportunity to join a network of outstanding individuals from around the world.
The Chevening scheme has given opportunities for advanced study to students from Qatar for over a decade now. Previous scholars have gone on to take high-level positions in organisations such as Qatar Petroleum, Qatar University and the Qatar Central Bank.
In 2008 Qatari Student Network founder Hassan Al Ibrahim won a place on the scheme and is currently studying for his Masters degree in Business Administration at Manchester University. Hassan says of his experience, "Chevening did not only provide me with an opportunity to pursue further education but it has helped me excel in my career path faster than my colleagues. It interconnected me with a multitude of graduates from different part of the world. I urge young Qatari professionals who have the will and the vision to excel to apply to this programme which would change their life positively."
Globally, the Chevening programme supports around 2,300 individuals every year for postgraduate studies or research in the UK. Among a long list of success, previous Chevening alumni include the President of Colombia, the Vice-President of Costa Rica, the King of Tonga and the Prime Ministers of Antigua & Barbuda and of Bulgaria.
The Chevening Scholarship Scheme is funded by British Embassy and administered by the British Council. HSBC contributes to the global scheme and co-funds one of the Qatar scholarships. Chevening Scholarships are full scholarships that cover tuition fees, monthly stipend and various one-off allowances.
Abdul Hakeem Mostafawi, Chief Executive Officer HSBC Qatar said, "HSBC has a long-standing relationship with the Chevening Scholarship scheme and funds 27 Chevening Scholars annually in 13 countries. In Qatar the focus is on seeking Qatari nationals who are likely to make a difference in the country upon their return from their studies in the UK. This strategy is in line with HSBC's vision to support the development of local talent and to nurture the youth who have a passion for strong values and work ethics that will ensure sustainable business development in Qatar."
British Ambassador John Hawkins said, "The Chevening Scholarship Scheme offers a fantastic opportunity to study in some of the world's top universities. We at the Embassy are delighted to continue to play a strong role in supporting the development of Qatar's brightest and best young talent."
Simon Winetroube, British Council Director said, "Chevening scholars are a very special group of people. The British Council is delighted to be involved in administering the scheme again and to offer more outstanding individuals from Qatar the opportunity to join this group and fulfil their potential."
The profile of a successful candidate
Competition for Chevening scholarships is intense, and globally only one in every 25 applicants is successful. A typical successful applicant would be:
• a graduate with proven academic skills and good English Language
• a young professional in early to mid career with a track record of achievement in the workplace.
• committed to return to Qatar and contribute to the socio-economic development of Qatar. (Applications from Qatari nationals are particularly welcome.)
• able to communicate a clear idea of how their scholarship will benefit Qatar on their return.
This year we particularly encourage applications in the fields of Banking and Finance; Educational Management; Human Resources Management; International Relations; and Law.
