Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan al Nahyan inaugurates 14th Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run
- United Arab Emirates: Saturday, February 21 - 2009 at 15:26
- PRESS RELEASE
Thousands of people gathered at the Abu Dhabi Corniche yesterday to run, jog, rollerblade or walk at the 14th annual Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run to raise awareness of cancer.
The Run, in which organisers estimated more than 15,000 people participated, kicked off from the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort car park to the Khaleej Al Arabi Road (30th Street) and back. Organisers put together an exciting programme for the crowd, with live musical entertainment from local Canadian band 'The Empty Quarter', as well as a performance by the Abu Dhabi Falcons ice hockey team and a quick cardio routine as a pre-Run warm-up.
Every dirham raised will be donated locally to the Faculty of Medicine in the UAE University to fund innovative cancer research projects headed by UAE medical professionals.
Since its inception, the Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run committee has funded more than AED3 million cancer research projects so far here in the UAE; seven projects have been completed, and four are to conclude within the next two years.
Last year, Abu Dhabi ranked the 2nd highest when it came to raising funds, and the UAE's combined Runs put it 1st out of the 29 participating countries in terms of revenues raised, and 2nd in terms of overall number of participants. Organisers hope to raise more than last year, and that donations following the Run will continue to pour in as they did last year.
Cheque donations are still being accepted. They can be made payable to 'Abu Dhabi Terry Fox Run' and sent to Sultan International Holding, PO Box 3486, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
