The winners came from 10,725 entries submitted by 346 daily and nondaily newspapers in 43 countries, this fact make the competition the most important for newspaper design.
United Arab Emirates is the 4th position earned awards, the United States led with 487 awards, followed by 108 for Canada, 46 for Mexico and 37 for the United Arab Emirates.
Behind UAE is Germany 35, Spain 34, Sweden 33, Argentina 32, Turkey and Brazil 23, Portugal 19, China 17 and Denmark 11.
For the first time the competition award with a Silver for Al Bayan, the Arabic language title based in Dubai and award of Excellence for Emarat Al Youm.
Gulf News the first newspaper to win a award in this competition and 3 consecutive years award winner won 10 awards.
The National, designed by Lucie Lacava one of the best and talented newspaper design consultant in the world won 23 awards including 3 silvers. The result make The National top 10 world most awards newspaper with The New York Times, Zaman and Los Angeles Times.
Douglas Okasaki, Society for News Design Regional Director for Middle East and Africa, says:
"I am very happy with the result, but I also wanted to see participation from others countries from Middle East, and more Arabic language titles in the winner list."
In its 30th annual "The Best of Newspaper Design Creative Competition," the Society for News Design has named four newspapers from Europe and one from Mexico as "World's Best-Designed Newspapers." The winners are:
• Akzia, Moscow, Russia, biweekly, circulation 200,000
• Eleftheros Tipos, Athens, Greece, daily, circulation, 86,000
• Expresso, Paço de Arcos, Portugal, weekly, circulation 120,000
• The News, Mexico City, daily, circulation 10,000
• Welt am Sonntag, Berlin, weekly, 400,000.
