The National scoops 22 awards for design

The National, Abu Dhabi Media Company's flagship English-language newspaper, has won 22 awards at the 30th annual Society for News Design competition, winning recognition for feature design as well as presentation of news, business and sport.

The National's tally of awards put it in the top ten at this year's competition and helped place the UAE fourth globally in the contest. The competition attracted 346 entries from 43 countries.

Gavin Dickinson, Executive Director of publishing commented, "The National continues to break ground with its quality content and world-class design. After less than a year, it is a great achievement to be in the top ten with established global publications such as the New York Times and all credit to our talented designers and journalists for putting us there. We are proud to lead the transformation in journalism in the region and delighted to see the UAE in the top five for newspaper design."

The National was launched in April 2008, with Lucie Lacava as design consultant. The designers honoured in the SND competition were: Laura Koot, the managing editor and art director; Nathan Estep, the deputy art director; Lee McGorie, the assistant art director; and the design team of Elysia Smith, Mathew Kurian, April Robinson, Kerri Abrams and Neil Vorano

Times, La Presse (Montreal), The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, the Boston Globe, Zaman (Istanbul), The National (Abu Dhabi), and three newspapers tied for No. 10: The Buffalo (N.Y.)
