About 280 students underwent the screening tests carried out by Dr. Ben Mempin, Hearing Aid Specialist and four of his team members from Al Yateem hearing care team.
As said by Dr. Howard Reed, Director, Dubai Women's College
"This is part of a wider initiative by DWC to emphasize health and wellness among our students. We are the only college to have incorporated physical education classes into the curriculum, introduced healthy foods without trans fats in the cafeteria and eliminated sodas and candy from the campus."
Dr. Khalil lleyan, Audiologist at Unitron Hearing Middle East who was invited for this occasion, participated in the research conducted on the hearing level of students and its effect on their academic performance. The research shows that out of the 220 students who volunteered for the check up, 11 of them had some kind of hearing problems and one student was diagnosed with 70% hearing loss. Dr. Ben recommended that educational institutions should conduct these tests at least once a year. He also mentioned about the planned cooperation with Al Yateem Opticians aimed at creating a program that would help identify and treat students with potential hearing loss.
Hearing loss is one of the common health issues that affect children and adults alike. Hearing problems range from difficulty in identifying sound direction to understanding conversation to complete deafness. Screening test done by a certified audiologist will help students realize the level of hearing loss if any and seek proper treatment.
