Aspetar and Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar sign Clinical Training and Education Agreement

Aspetar, Qatar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q), signed a new agreement for the delivery of clinical training to WCMC-Q medical students during their primary care rotation.

The intent of the agreement is to promote medical education in primary care, particularly its musculo-skeletal aspects, and collaborative research. Signatories to the agreement today were Dr Mohammed GA Al Maadheed, MD, PhD, Director-General of ASPETAR and Dr Antonio M. Gotto, Jr, Provost for Medical Affairs and Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC) in New York.

As part of the agreement, ASPETAR will make its facilities available as a clinical education training site for WCMC-Q students during their primary care clinical rotations while qualifying ASPETAR teaching staff will be granted WCMC-Q faculty appointments. The Medical College will also grant ASPETAR physicians access to the WCMC-Q Distributed eLibrary, an electronic repository of more than 1600 publications and periodicals.

ASPETAR facilities feature Centers of Excellence for sports medicine, sports science, orthopaedics, rehabilitation and research and education, and offer medical treatment and services for musculo-skeletal disorders in a state-of-the-art hospital.

Dr. Maadheed welcomed the signing of the Agreement as an important milestone:

Dean Gotto said: "Sports medicine is advancing all the time and ASPETAR offer a unique facility, with state of the art equipment and an impressive faculty. Today's signing complements the existing affiliation agreement we have with Hamad Medical Corporation which is also proving a key partnership in delivering medical education to the next generation of doctors in the region. "

Dr Javaid Sheikh, Interim Dean and Vice Dean for Research of WCMC-Q, added: "Our partnership with ASPETAR is a testimony to our commitment to provide WCMC-Q students with excellent opportunities for clinical education. By this agreement, WCMC-Q continues to help advance with its partners the quality of medical education available to students. Our students will have an opportunity to directly observe the emerging field of sports medicine with some of the most renowned physicians in this field. The agreement demonstrates our commitment to providing our students with clinical experiences across a wide spectrum of medical specialties."

Aspetar - Qatar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital located within the ASPIRE Zone. From its inception the primary mission of ASPETAR has been to 'assist athletes in achieving their maximal potential' throughout the continuum of care.

In additional ASPETAR is performing Qatari population studies which aim to provide objective measures of lifestyle habits related to chronic diseases in the Qatari population, gain reliable estimates of chronic metabolic diseases as well as musculo-skeletal and cognitive function.

Established in partnership with Qatar Foundation, WCMC-Q is part of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, the first American institution to offer its M.D. degree overseas. WCMC-Q offers a complete and integrated educational program, comprising the two-year Pre-medical Program, followed by the four-year Medical Program, with teaching by Cornell faculty. There are separate admission processes for each Program, guided by the standards of admission in use at Cornell University in Ithaca, and its Medical College in New York City.
