Gulfood full of Eastern promise for Welsh Lamb
- United Arab Emirates: Thursday, February 26 - 2009 at 11:39
- PRESS RELEASE
Welsh Lamb will once again take centre stage at one of the most important trade fairs in the Middle East, Gulfood.
Hybu Cig Cymru (Meat Promotion Wales) has been successful in helping to supply Welsh Lamb to shops, restaurants and hotels in Dubai
Now HCC hopes Welsh Lamb's triumph in Dubai will act as a springboard to gain new orders for hotels and restaurants throughout the Middle East.
"Wales is the only country in the UK currently exporting lamb to the United Arab Emirates," said HCC Chief Executive Gwyn Howells, who will lead the delegation of Welsh meat exporters to Gulfood.
"HCC's aim at this show will be to create new trading opportunities in the Middle East, generating improved returns for producers and processors back home in Wales," Howells added.
The HCC stand will showcase the virtues of fresh Welsh Lamb to chefs and buyers from across the Middle East. A full range of Welsh Lamb cuts will be on display.
HCC's Marketing Manager Bill Joyce said: "We will use the show to further develop our existing contacts in the region, and hope to extend Welsh Lamb's reach into other Gulf states.
"Welsh Lamb is respected as a natural product that is in high demand in the United Arab Emirates. We want to replicate that success across the Middle East," added Joyce.
HCC have already achieved much success in this region and are once again exhibiting at Gulfood thanks to the help of International Business Wales (IBW), the Welsh Assembly Government's international trade and investment arm. IBW acts as the driving force in establishing alliances between companies in Wales and their counterparts overseas, whilst actively seeking out inward investment opportunities for client companies looking to Europe and the UK as a preferred international business location.

About International Business Wales (IBW):
The Welsh Assembly Government is a democratically elected body, which was established in May 1999. It has devolved powers and responsibilities for developing and implementing policies in Wales on a broad range of issues, including economic development, education, the environment, agriculture, housing, roads and transport.
The Welsh Assembly works closely with the UK Parliament in developing primary legislation and has powers to introduce secondary legislation of its own.
International Business Wales (IBW) is the Welsh Assembly Government's international trade and investment arm. It forms part of the Department for the Economy and Transport, and acts as the driving force in establishing alliances between companies in Wales and their counterparts overseas, whilst actively seeking out inward investment opportunities for client companies looking to Europe and the UK as a preferred international business location.
Wales has a long and distinguished history of trading internationally, but since the decline of the heavy industries over the past 30 years, status in the international trading arena has diminished considerably. In comparison with other regions of the UK, Wales' performance is poor, both in terms of the overall value of exports and, perhaps more significantly, on a per capita basis.
The Welsh Assembly Government recognises that the development of improved international trading performance is key to improving the prosperity of the nation. The development and maintenance of economic strength, will contribute to the wider aims of marketing Wales as a world class business location, and as a destination for tourists.
