Both Shams and Hamlin, specialized in Islamic Law at the University of London, gave a short history of Sharia Law before switching to the law as it stands today with regards to working rights for married women, inheritance and child custody. A question and answer session followed and clarified uncertainties and doubts still remaining in students' and teachers' minds.
One of the many interesting laws pointed out by Shams was that Muslim women today, by default, are allowed to work, if they are working at the time of marriage. Should a husband not wish them to do so, then it is up to them to apply to the courts to overturn the rule. Other issues discussed involved mixed marriages, second marriages and divorce and the effects of these on child custody. With the growing number of divorces in both the Islamic and the Western world, knowledge on this matter is essential for the protection of all concerned.
Dr. Monica Gallant, Chair of the Business Division stated,
"It is crucial that our students be aware of their legal rights in order to take on leadership roles in their community"
The lecture topic will be deepened during the annual Insight Dubai Conference which will be held at the college from the 12 - 17 April. This interactive conference brings female participants from all over the world to share cultural views and opinions, to discuss global issues, and to enhance leadership skills.
