DFWAC's Afra Al Basti unsung Hero for 2009 at Ahlan Hot 100

As a token of her tireless work to help shelter and protect women and children who are victims of domestic violence, child abuse, and trafficking, the CEO of the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, Afra Al Basti has been featured amongst the most prominent figures in Dubai for 2009, according to leading social weekly, Ahlan.

Dubai Foundation for Women and Children (DFWAC), the first licensed non-profit shelter in the UAE took center stage at the Ahlan Hot 100 party, held Wednesday February 25, 2009, at the Westin Hotel on Jumeriah Beach. Afra Al Basti was named one of the Unsung Heroes for 2009 as part of the annual ceremony.

The Alhlan HOT 100 figures is a culmination of extraordinary individuals who are the creative, industrial, social and unstoppable forces that make Dubai a unique place to be. Among the honored figures on the distinguished Hot 100 list are the style icons for their glamorous lifestyle, the party people who keep the city entertained, and the unsung heroes who are changing people's lives for the better.

"It is a great privilege to be on the Hot 100 list, I am fortunate because it is extremely satisfying to work with and for people in need. As an Emirati and Muslim, it is my privilege to be a part of DFWAC which has offered us all this incredible opportunity to give back to the society that has supported us all along."


Since DFWAC's establishment in 2007, Afra Al Basti and her team of human rights experts and social workers have persevered to provide a safe haven for women and children in Dubai who are victims of violence. DFWAC works very closely with the UAE National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking and other local and international governmental and non-governmental bodies to support women and raise social awareness.
