His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation, Chief Executive and Chairman of The Emirates Group, today inaugurated the 17th Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS) at the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) - Mina Seyahi.

Following the opening ceremony, HH Sheikh Ahmed and senior VIP delegates of the UAE toured all sections of the show, which included the Luxury Supplies and Services, Equipment Supplies and Service, External and Marina areas, as well as the dedicated superyacht marina display, which has seen a 45 percent growth over last year's event.

More than 721 companies from 50 countries are participating at this year's Dubai Boat Show, which runs from 3-7 March.

"The initial response seen this year has been very positive, which is very encouraging considering the current economic climate. With exhibitors using the Dubai Boat Show for worldwide launches and regional premiers, it has been a great start and we expect major sales and news to be announced throughout the five-day event," said Helal Saeed Almarri, CEO, Dubai World Trade Centre, organiser of Dubai International Boat Show 2009.

Gulf Craft, leading local boat manufacturer unveiled the Majesty 121, a 37 metre superyacht, and American yacht manufacturer, Sunseeker used the Dubai Boat Show for the global launch of its 38 metre superyacht.

Ali Al Jafla, Managing Director of Sunseeker Middle East, said: "With the Middle East proving to be a thriving boating market, we used the Dubai International Boat Show as the ideal platform for the global launch of Sunseeker's 38-metre superyacht. We have already seen strong interest from visitors and we are looking forward to a successful five-day event."

The opening day also saw major regional premiers from AMELS, Al Masood Marine, ART Marine LLC (Azimut, Benetti), Beuchat, Burger Boats, Fairline, Leisure Marine (Princess Yachts), and Western Marine (Marquis), amongst many others.

Running alongside the Dubai Boat Show is the fifth Gulf Boating Conference, entitled 'Where is the industry going?' taking place on 4 March 2009.
