The initiative, hosted jointly by Dubal's National Programmes & Development department and Technical Training Centre for the benefit of UAE Nationals, will provide eight VEDC students with valuable on-the-job work experience over a six-week period.

Aiming to help fulfill the practical component of their studies by complementing the theoretical training obtained through VEDC, seven areas of appropriate workplace exposure have been identified, namely: Residential Area; Mobile Equipment Workshop; Equipment Repair Shop; Inspection & Rigging; Electrical Workshop; A/C maintenance; and I.T. Technical Support.

The VEDC Programme began on 8 February 2009 with a morning's orientation for the purpose of introducing the students to Dubal and emphasizing the importance of safety at work. The agenda included a viewing of the DUBAL corporate film, a briefing on the programme itself, a viewing of Dubal's safety film, a presentation on workplace safety, and a plant tour. Then, after receiving their personal protective equipment, the students were dispatched to their respective workshop areas. The students will be rotated after three weeks, so as to gain diverse experience.

"This initiative is integral to the activities conducted by our National Development Programmes & Development department, which has an overriding mandate to increase the employability of UAE Nationals through skills training and development opportunities, coupled with targeted recruitment activities," says Marwan A A Mohammed (Acting Head of Recruitment, Organization Development department). "By targeting technical students who are also potential recruits for our workshops, we are simultaneously addressing the organizational needs of Dubal."
